International Day of the Chef -
Kiwi Style
Wednesday
October 20th saw the branches of the New Zealand Chefs
Association compete amongst each other in the inaugural
celebration of International Day of the Chef, with
a pancake cook-off to see which regions team of chefs
could cook the most amount of pancakes in 1 hour.
Chef teams the length and breadth of the country
assembled in readiness for the 12pm start.
Team briefings were held prior to the start where
strategies and the game plan were discussed and finalized.
Upon been given the starting gun at 12.00pm the teams
appled fluid movements and skills in their quest to
become the New Zealand Pancake Kings.
Lunchtime
crowds joined in the fun and got in behind their team
with their support and in turn purchased plates of
the pancakes served with varieties of toppings such
as whipped cream, maple syrup, bacon, walnuts and
all manner of sweet and savory delights; for the sum
of a gold coin donation going to the Branches chosen
charity.
Time was called at 1.00pm and the final results were
phoned over to national coordinator, Gary Miller over
in Christchurch, the final results were:
Auckland - 449 Pancakes
Queenstown - 366 Pancakes
Rotorua 354 - Pancakes
Christchurch - 317 Pancakes
New Plymouth - 217 Pancakes
Napier - 175 Pancakes
The
gold coin donations throughout the country raised
$3,000 and this added to the sums raised from other
regional events prior to this day means that the chefs
of New Zealand will have raised and donated close
to $30,000 this year for local charities.
A big thank-you to the branch members who gave their
time and to our sponsors especially Goodman Fielder
who helped make this happen and to the public for
joining in and supporting the chefs of our country.
